DK Initiative
About DKI

The Dipendra Kandel Initiative (DKI) is a policy and program research platform committed to strengthening evidence-based decision-making, institutional capacity, and structured engagement across development sectors. DKI originated as a concept developed by Engr. Dipendra Kandel, a public innovator and international election observer from Nepal, who serves as its Founding Chair. The initiative builds upon the earlier work of the Kandel Foundation (est. 2015), which also began as a concept led by him and later contributed several of its program areas to DKI.

DKI works across a broad range of thematic and operational areas including agriculture, culture, economic development, education, election systems, health and nutrition, climate change and environment, human rights and social justice, women’s empowerment, community development, and youth development and volunteerism. Through these domains, the initiative conducts applied research and program-focused studies that generate practical insights for policy and implementation.

A core function of DKI is policy and program research, where it produces evidence-based analysis, policy briefs, and field-informed recommendations to support improved governance, program design, and institutional effectiveness. In parallel, DKI undertakes NGO assessment and capacity analysis, helping organizations understand their operational strengths, gaps, funding access, and overall institutional readiness.policy and program research, where it produces evidence-based analysis, policy briefs, and field-informed recommendations to support improved governance, program design, and institutional effectiveness. DKI also implements specialized programs including election observation, focusing on the analysis of electoral systems and voting processes to generate comparative insights on democratic practices and participation frameworks. The initiative engages in sister city coordination support, facilitating structured interaction and knowledge exchange between municipalities and institutions for collaborative development.election observation, focusing on the analysis of electoral systems and voting processes to generate comparative insights on democratic practices and participation frameworks. In addition, DKI hosts DKI Sportsphere, a program migrated from the Kandel Foundation, dedicated to sports development, youth engagement, and structured athletic initiatives. It also leads disaster response support systems, also transitioned from the Kandel Foundation, focusing on coordination, rapid information flow, and institutional support during emergencies and humanitarian situations.DKI Sportsphere, a program migrated from the Kandel Foundation, dedicated to sports development, youth engagement, and structured athletic initiatives. The initiative further facilitates structured engagement between stakeholders by supporting coordination among communities, institutions, and development actors. This includes fostering dialogue, improving access to information, and strengthening collaboration mechanisms that enhance participation and program delivery at local and national levels.

Through research, assessment, and multi-sector programming, DKI contributes to building stronger institutional ecosystems and more responsive development systems. Its work bridges evidence and action, ensuring that insights generated from field realities inform practical and scalable solutions across sectors.

Ultimately, DKI aims to empower the Government of Nepal and strengthen the nation as a whole by improving policy systems, enhancing program effectiveness, and fostering inclusive, evidence-based development across all sectors.

"I do not think that it is necessary to get into politics in order to develop the nation which can be done by sharing our researched visions and suggestions under a framework of media accountability with public leaders, who must take them into consideration."
