Our Approach
The Capacity Building Department is the core of DKI’s programs, designed to develop human resources, leadership, and technical capacity in Nepal’s key sectors. It integrates practical training, professional education, and international exposure, empowering youth and professionals to contribute effectively to agriculture, forestry, aviation, and other public sector developmental areas. Programs are conducted both in Nepal and abroad, ensuring participants gain hands-on skills, global knowledge, and practical experience to apply back in Nepal.
1.0 Practical / Hands-On Capacity Building
Practical training emphasizes real-world skills that participants can apply immediately. Programs are conducted in Nepal and internationally, exposing participants to global best practices.
1.1 Apprenticeship/Traineeship
The Apprenticeship and Traineeship programs provide structured placements in partner farms, institutions, NGOs, and international organizations, allowing participants to gain hands-on experience in their chosen fields. Focus areas include agriculture, where participants learn modern farming techniques, organic production, and crop management; horticulture, with training in greenhouse operations, nursery management, and plant production; and forestry, covering sustainable forest management and conservation projects. The programs also extend to aviation, providing exposure to airport operations and travel and tourism management (with future expansion into an IATA training center), as well as other public sector developmental areas, such as youth programs, rural development initiatives, and community projects. The objective of these apprenticeships and traineeships is to develop practical expertise, provide international exposure, and enhance employability, ensuring participants are fully prepared to contribute effectively in their sectors both in Nepal and abroad.
1.2 Technical Workshops
The Technical Workshops are short-term, intensive training programs conducted both locally in Nepal and abroad, designed to provide participants with hands-on experience and practical skills in their fields. These workshops cover areas such as precision farming and modern irrigation systems, crop protection and soil management techniques, and greenhouse and nursery management for agriculture and horticulture participants. For those in aviation, workshops include operational skills and customer service training to build professional competencies. The primary objective of these workshops is to equip participants with sector-specific skills, foster practical learning, and expose them to international standards and innovative practices, ensuring they are prepared to implement these techniques effectively in their professional environments.
2.0 Knowledge / Education-Based Capacity Building
The Knowledge / Education-Based Capacity Building component complements practical training by providing participants with theoretical understanding, leadership skills, and professional competencies. Structured training programs are conducted both in Nepal and internationally, covering key sectors such as agriculture, aviation, horticulture, forestry, and other public sector developmental areas. These programs include modules on sector-specific science and management, sustainable development practices, and exposure to global case studies and innovations, ensuring participants gain a solid understanding of both local and international best practices. Through executive education, participants develop advanced skills in leadership, strategic planning, decision-making, and project management, preparing emerging leaders, mid-level managers, and professionals to take on managerial roles or lead initiatives in their respective fields. Additionally, the programs offer locally and internationally recognized skill certifications that validate competencies across agriculture, horticulture, forestry, aviation, and other developmental sectors, enhancing employability, professional credibility, and readiness to contribute effectively in both domestic and international contexts. By combining knowledge acquisition, leadership development, and formal certification, this component ensures participants are well-prepared to apply their learning, drive innovation, and make meaningful contributions to Nepal’s public sector and developmental initiatives.
3.0 Career Development and Mentoring
The Career Development & Mentoring component follows the “Learn – Intern/Train – Earn Skills – Return” model, ensuring participants gain knowledge, practical experience, and professional expertise that they can apply to Nepal’s developmental sectors. Participants first learn through classroom, online, and executive education programs, gaining a solid foundation in agriculture, horticulture, forestry, aviation, and other public sector developmental areas. They then intern or train through structured apprenticeships, technical workshops, and hands-on programs both in Nepal and abroad, acquiring practical, globally relevant skills. During this process, participants earn skills—developing expertise, leadership, and professional competencies that enhance their employability and confidence. Finally, participants return to Nepal to apply their learning, contribute to community development, introduce innovative practices, and strengthen capacity in key sectors. This model ensures that international exposure translates into real impact, enabling participants to become effective leaders and change-makers in Nepal’s agriculture, forestry, aviation, and other public sector developmental areas.
4.0 Administratie & Support Work
The Administrative & Support Work component ensures the smooth and efficient delivery of all Capacity Building programs, both in Nepal and abroad. This includes comprehensive admission and documentation support, handled in collaboration with a registered education consultancy in accordance with Nepalese law, ensuring compliance and proper management of international programs. Participants are responsible for paying service fees to the education consultancy, which may also be eligible for college commissions where applicable. DKI, as the NGO, receives any donations or contributions made toward program support. The department also provides visa application guidance for participants attending programs abroad and carries out rigorous monitoring and evaluation to track participant progress, skills acquisition, and overall program impact. Partner coordination is maintained with farms, educational institutions, NGOs, and international organizations to facilitate apprenticeships, technical workshops, and knowledge exchange. Additionally, the department manages financial and administrative operations, ensuring transparency and supporting the sustainability and continued growth of DKI’s Capacity Building initiatives.
5.0 Objectives of the Capacity Building Department
T
The Capacity Building Department is designed to develop practical competence, professional expertise, and leadership capacity in both domestic and international contexts. Participants have the opportunity to learn and earn skills through structured apprenticeships, technical workshops, and hands-on programs, ensuring they gain experience that meets international standards and is directly applicable in Nepal. These programs not only build individual skills but also prepare participants to contribute effectively to national development goals, fostering innovation and sustainable practices across sectors.
In addition to practical training, the programs emphasize knowledge acquisition, leadership development, and strategic thinking, equipping participants to make informed decisions, lead projects, and introduce innovative solutions across agriculture, horticulture, forestry, aviation, and other public sector developmental areas. By combining global best practices with local insights, the department ensures that participants are prepared to address real-world challenges in Nepal and implement initiatives that create measurable impact.
A central focus of DKI is to empower the government and strengthen public sector effectiveness. The department actively works to identify gaps between citizens’ needs and government services, analyzing areas where policy, implementation, or resources may be insufficient. Based on this analysis, DKI organizes targeted capacity-building programs, workshops, and apprenticeships to bridge these gaps, enabling participants to act as catalysts for improved governance, community engagement, and sectoral innovation.
The department also creates clear career pathways, helping participants apply the skills they earn to meaningful employment, entrepreneurship, or leadership roles, thereby directly contributing to Nepal’s growth and development. By focusing on strategic capacity building, participants acquire expertise that strengthens systems, improves productivity, and fosters sustainable practices in key sectors.
At the heart of this approach is the Learn‑Intern/Train‑Earn Skills‑Return model, which ensures that knowledge and practical skills gained both locally and internationally are applied effectively in Nepal. Participants not only gain international exposure but also return to implement solutions, drive community development, and bridge gaps between citizens and government, generating lasting impact and creating a skilled workforce ready to support policy implementation, public service delivery, and developmental initiatives.
Through this integrated model, DKI aims to empower individuals, strengthen institutions, and enhance collaboration between the government and citizens, building a resilient and capable workforce that contributes meaningfully to Nepal’s socio-economic progress and public sector transformation.
